International growth - 1992 to the present
Rapak is part of DS Smith Plastics which is a division of DS Smith plc, a £2 bn international group focused on packaging and paper. Following a number of mergers and acquisitions, Rapak has become one of the world leaders in liquid packaging.
In 1992 a company called David S Smith Packaging was created after the purchase by David S Smith Plc of two British companies, Coloreed and LiquiBox and one German company, Sieger. In 2000, David S Smith Packaging acquired two American companies, Rapak and Packaging Systems, and, in 2002, decided to use the Rapak name for the new combined company.
Also in 2002, a German company called Zewathener was added to the group and Rapak became the leading liquid packaging supplier in the European market. In 2003, it signed a joint-venture agreement with Rapak Asia Pacific in order to provide its services throughout the Asia Pacific region. The joint venture led to full ownership of Rapak Asia Pacific in 2005 and Rapak was able to provide customers with a seamless service throughout the major trading areas of the world, the US, Europe and Asia Pacific.
Rapak's growth continues as, in 2007 Rapak has joined forces with Herti-M, a Bulgarian packaging specialist for the wine and food industry to form Rapak AD. Rapak Vostock including a sales office and warehouse facilities opened in 2008, in the Moscow and Anapa regions in Russia.
Today, Rapak's customers include companies operating on a global scale who prefer to work with a single supplier throughout the world.
